Gender-Focused Responsive Security Accelerated in Liberia

The training targets about 54 female security officers from nine security institutions working within the government sector.

Another round of training for nine security institutions on responsive security has been conducted by Medica-Liberia with support from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

The training forms part of the Inclusive Security project intended to augment the Security Sector Reform in Liberia being rolled out under the theme “Nothing For Us Without Us”.

The training targets about 54 female security officers from nine security institutions working within the government sector.

It brought together the Liberia National Police, Liberia Immigration Service, Armed Forces of Liberia, Ministry of Defense, Liberia National Fire Service, and Ministry of Justice.

Others are the Liberia Drug Enforcement Agency, National Bureau of Correction and the Executive Protection System.

At the training, Cllr. Abla G. Williams told beneficiaries to make use of the opportunity, urging them to use the skills gained from the training wisely.

For her part, the Gender Coordinator of the Liberia National Fire Service, LNFS, Col. Jennes D Johnson, lauded support from UNDP, adding that knowledge being acquired will boost their skills in project management and security leadership.

“We have an obligation as security personnel to maintain the peace the country now enoys, therefore we are obliged to ensure that with the knowledge obtained from these workshops, we will do our part in promoting peace and security in Liberia,” Johnson noted.

Medica-Liberia is implementing within the Inclusive Security Project with a grant from UNDP in the tune of US$170,000 for six months to conduct capacity building on Gender and Security Sector Reform.

It provides support to the Gender Units within security sector institutions in Liberia by mobilizing resources to fund training programs that will help them become fully operational.
