UNDP Liberia ProgrammesSMALL ARMS CONTROL PROGRAMME Despite the successful implementation and completion of the Disarmament and Demobilization (DD) phase of the DDRR programme in November 2004, there remains an overwhelming evidence of the presence of small arms and light weapons (SALW) still in circulation in Liberia. These weapons continue to circulate between the neighboring countries of Sierra Leone, Guinea, and Cote d'Ivoire, and could potentially threaten the gains that have been made in consolidating the peace in the sub-region. The Small Arms Control Programme promotes community security through an integrated cross border approach to micro-disarmament within West Africa. The programme operates within the programmatic framework of the Recovery and Reintegration Programme of UNDP. All projects are identified and implemented in close collaboration with government, UN agencies and UNMIL, and civil society. The current phase has three main objectives: • To facilitate the establishment and capacity building of the National Commission on Small Arms in Liberia; Field presence National Commission on Small Arms A National Technical Team on Small Arms and a National Focal Point at the Executive Mansion have been appointed.
