POVERTY REDUCTIONPoverty Reduction specifically aims to strengthen national capacity through youth employment and empowerment, addressing gender equality and women’s economic empowerment, and mainstreaming energy and environment in government policies. Background/Overview This Programme supports equitable, inclusive and sustainable growth with a focus on the rehabilitation of basic infrastructure, energy and environment management, youth empowerment and employment and growth of an inclusive financial sector (Microfinance). Poverty reduction initiatives contribute to achieving UNDAF Outcome 2: National Economic Policies and Programmes and are being implemented to support equitable, inclusive and sustainable socio-economic development during Liberia’s recovery process. It originates from two of the government PRS Pillars – Economic Revitalization and Infrastructure / Basic Services. UNDP’s Poverty Reduction programme concentrates on downstream related interventions such as Youth Empowerment and Employment, Community Based Recovery and Development, and an Inclusive Financial Sector. UNDP provides a mix of policy level support with the downstream interventions to expand income opportunities and sustainable livelihoods for the poor and marginalized. Critical entry points include access to services and creation of opportunities for income generation, which create an environment for the government and civil society organizations to play a supplementary role. Partners include Ministry of Youth and Sports (MYS), Ministry of Transport, Ministry of Labor, Federation of Liberian Youth, YMCA, private contractors and civil society organizations. In addition to the projects listed on the right, UNDP is also part of a joint programme on Food Security and Nutrition which seeks to improve food availability, accessibility and improving the nutritional status of Liberians.
