Millennium Development Goals in Liberia
________________________________________

UNDP is the global champion of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), this is no less the case in Liberia. Apart from the launching of the first Millennium Development Goals Report for Liberia in December 2004, a number of initiatives have been initiated to increase awareness of the MDGs at all levels of society, from government to communities.

SENSITISATION WORKSHOPS FOR GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS
In March 2005, after the official launch of the MDG Report of Liberia, workshops were held for civil servants and government officials acquainting them with the content of the report and sensitizing them to the MDGs.

MDGS AND THE MEDIA
In August 2005, UNDP in collaboration with the Press Union of Liberia, held a series of MDG workshops in the county capitals Gbargna (Bong), Zwedru (Grand Gedeh) and Monrovia (Montserrado).

The aim of the workshops was to raise awareness amongst the media, print and radio, of the true meaning of the MDGs and to make them partners in helping Liberia achieve them. This included introducing the MDGs to journalists and making editors aware of the importance of the MDGs in everyday journalism. Particular emphasis was laid on the October 2005 elections and the role that journalists play in the pre-elections preparations, and how the MDGs relate to them.

The result of the workshops was the drafting of a Statement of Intent by the journalists, committing them to helping to sensitize communities about the MDGs. This statement was signed by over XX journalists from over 10 counties.

Follow-up workshops will be held in 2006.

MDG POSTAL STAMP STUDENT ART COMPETITION
A MDG postal stamp competition was held in Bong, Motserrado and Grand Gedeh in October 2005. The aim of this joint initiative of UNDP, UNICEF, UNMIL, Child Art Liberia and the Ministry of Post and Telecommunications was to raise awareness of the MDGs amongst young persons, in particular students.

The students participating in the 3-day art competition designed their own depictions of the eight MDGs,. The students’ competition was preceded by a Trainer of Trainers MDG workshop for teachers. These teachers returned to their respective schools and prepared the students for the competition. The schools participating in the competition were selected with the help of UNICEF.

Ten winners of the competition will be determined by a panel of judges in Monrovia and will become commemorative postal stamps sold by the Ministry of Post and Telecommunications.

MDGS AND THE YOUTH
Supported by UNDP, the Liberian youth organization YOCADS (Youth for Community Academic and Development Services) held a Round table Forum on MDGs in August 2005. The discussion facilitated the development of a paper on how the youth in Liberia can contribute to progress made towards the MDGs. This paper was subsequently presented at the National youth conference which took place 21st-27th August 2005 in Kakata, Bong County.
