UNDP In Liberia

Following 14-years of civil conflict, and a two year transitional period during which a concerted international effort began to assist Liberians to rebuild their country, there is new hope in Liberia.

UNDP has drawn on its extensive experience in post-conflict recovery and reconstruction efforts, and nearly four decades of development work in Liberia, to offer critical assistance in recovery and human development. With it’s wealth of experience and knowledge in the region and human development, UNDP Liberia is a trusted development partner and an important asset to Liberia.

By virtue of its political neutrality, its substantive development capacity, and its position as a major partner to governments, UNDP is playing a unique mediation role between the Government of Liberia and the donor community.

The principal mandate of UNDP is to support the new government with the identification of national priorities and the development and establishment of a comprehensive human development and poverty reduction strategy. The different pillars of the UNDP Liberia Country Programme reflect many facets of these national priorities and provide a holistic response to the diverse challenges faced by the country.

UNDP Liberia Country Programme
The UNDP Country Programme is a comprehensive response to many of the challenges identified in the National Agenda for Recovery and Development and its predecessor the Results-Focused Transition Framework as well as being aligned with the attainment of UNDP corporate strategic goals and the Millennium Development Goals.

UNDP's activities in Liberia fall within seven pivotal areas:
• Disarmament, Demobilization, Rehabilitation and Reintegration;
• Community-Based Recovery;
• Small Arms and Light Weapons,
• Democratic Governance;
• Human Rights and Protection;
• Responding to HIV/AIDS and other diseases; and
• Environment

The programmes are being implemented in support of national recovery and development efforts and are implemented under the Direct Execution (DEX) Service Center modality. The promotion of human rights, the empowerment of women, HIV/AIDs and environmental sustainability are cross-cutting issues that are mainstreamed into all sectors of the UNDP Country Programme.
