DEMOCRATIC GOVERNANCE: RESTORATION OF RULE OF LAW

Police Service Training Academy
UNDP provides assistance to the Police Service Training Academy in the form of logistics and procurement, funding for which has been provided by the United States Government. The introduction of the Academy, located in Paynesville, Monrovia, commenced on May 2004.

Training of the police cadets falls under the auspices of the UN Mission in Liberia (UNMIL), while UNDP’s support to the Police Academy consists mainly of contracting services, such as food catering, cleaning and laundry, garbage collection, security, and sanitation. Also included is the general procurement of training uniforms, uniform gear, teaching materials, furniture, clothing, and toiletries. Supplies come from both local and international vendors.

UNDP’s support has recently expanded to the construction of a shooting range and shooting house; as well as the construction of water and sanitation facilities to include the construction of a pit latrine and the digging of 2 wells complete with submergible pumps.

All Police Academy activities are implemented under the UNDP DEX Service Center modality, with the DEX engineering team working closely with the Police Academy.

Police Stations
UNDP is expanding its role towards the restoration of rule of law to include the rehabilitation of the Liberian National Police (LNP) stations. So far, UNDP Liberia has implemented 2 Quick Impact Projects (QIPs) towards this endeavor.

Central Prison
The rehabilitation of the central prison in Monrovia commenced on 25 April 2005.
