European Union, Liberia and UNDP to sign Election support project

On Monday, 21 September, 2015, the European Union (EU), United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Government of Liberia will sign an agreement to support the Liberia electoral processes covering 2015 to 2017.

During the signing ceremony, the Head of the European Union Delegation in Liberia, Ambassador Tiina Intelmann will represent the EU; Finance and Development Planning Minister, Amara Konneh, the Government of Liberia and the United Nations Development Programme Resident Representative, Antonio Vigilante will represent the UN.

The Agreement will be signed at the offices of the National Elections Commission in the presence of Chairman Jerome Korkoyah as the National Elections Commission is responsible for overseeing the electoral process and will play a key role in the implementation of the project with support from UNDP.

Under the tripartite agreement, the EU will contribute 10 million Euro (approximately USD$11.4 million) and the UNDP USD$1 million to help strengthen the capacity of the National Elections Commission, improve voter registration, enhance women participation in the electoral processes, reinforce mechanisms for political parties and enhance security during elections.

The fund will be further spent on actions to improve civic and voter education, strengthen the electoral legal framework and to engender successful conduct of elections.

The signing ceremony will be graced by an array of electoral stakeholders and partners.
