Service Centers Open In Maryland and Sinoe CountiesAug 15, 2017
In a bid to take relevant documentation and other services closer to the people, the Government of Liberia through the Ministry of Internal Affairs and partners have officially opened two additional Service Centers (CSC) in Maryland and Sinoe Counties.
The Maryland and Sinoe Counties Service Centers bring to ten (10) the number of CSCs that have been established under the Liberia Decentralization Support Program (LDSP) and serve as a one-stop shop for the issuance of documentation services relating to certificates, permits and licenses.
Speaking at programs marking the formal opening of the Maryland County Service Center in Harper City, Maryland County over the weekend, Governance Commission Chairman, Dr. Amos C. Sawyer called on residents of Maryland and the people of Liberia to cherish and take ownership of the different development activities being carried out across the country by the Government and development partners.
“Our partners have helped us with these facilities and are very much willing to do more but they are looking at us to see how we manage and make use of these ones before adding on to them,” Dr. Sawyer said.
He told the people of Maryland that development partners are willing and ready to increase support to the development drive of Liberia, but it was equally important for the people to properly manage and use the existing facilities and structures.
Dr. Sawyer noted that the opening of the Maryland CSC is in furtherance of the Unity Party-led government’s commitment to decentralize services and governance to the people as promised by President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf.
Implementation of the Liberia Decentralization Support Program is being carried out by the Government with funding from the European Union, Swedish Government, United States Agency for International Development (USAID), United Nations Mission in Liberia (UNMIL) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
For his part, the United Nations Mission in Liberia (UNMIL) Deputy SRSG for Peace Consolidation Yacoub EL Hillo said taking services closer to the people is a “good step in the right direction”.
Mr. Hillo said even though taking government services to the people is good, but it was not the only answer to addressing the needs of the people of Liberia.
“My message and request is only one. Please expedite the passage of the Local Government Act and the Land Rights Bill, because that is when the true decentralization will actually begin…” he said.
The Deputy Special Representative of the United Nation Secretary General in the United Nations Mission in Liberia (UNMIL), United Nations Resident Coordinator and Resident Representative of the UNDP stated that while it true that the CSC will serve the people of the region, and generate revenue for the government of Liberia, the passage of the Local Government Act and Land Rights Bill was even more important in the decentralization of governance.
He pledged the United Nations fullest support to the government effort to take governance and services closer to the people of Liberia.
Prior to the Maryland CSC opening, Service Centers have been opened in Grand Bassa, Margibi, Bong, Nimba, Gbarpolu, Grand Cape Mount, Bomi and Grand Gedeh Counties, respectively.
Representatives of the Swedish Government, USAID and the European Union made separate remarks calling on the people to lobby with their lawmakers particularly those in the Liberian Senate for the passage of the Local Government Act and Land Rights Bill that have been passed by the House of Representatives awaiting concurrence by the Liberian Senate.
Receiving the keys to the facilities, Maryland County Superintendent Betsy Kouh-Toe thanked the Government and partners for the project and promised to maintain and fully utilize the facility.
Madam toe said the opening of the CSC in Maryland will bring great relief to citizens who will no longer have to travel to Monrovia to process and obtain relevant documentations.
Lofa, Grand Kru, Rivergee, Montserrado and Rivercess are the next counties targeted to establish Service Centers.Contact
