Security Training gets underway ahead of Elections

As Liberia gears up for its democratic elections slated for October 10 2017, security personnel are participating in series of training sessions in electoral security with support from the multi-donor basket fund in collaboration with the Liberia National Police and the National Elections Commission.

The United Nations Development Programme, European Union, Ireland, Sweden and Canada support this fund as partners of the National Elections Commission.

Security is a key component in credible elections and security officers are being drilled in a number of modules that will increase their understanding of best practices in electoral policing.

The trainings will also assist security officers manage the demands of Election Day policing and enhance their understanding of electoral procedures.

A handbook produced by the Basket Fund will also be distributed among security personnel as a guide to provide election security during their deployment.

The Security trainings will last for five weeks and are being conducted at various locations across the Country.

Over 5,000 security personnel are expected to be deployed at polling centers across the country during the October 10 Presidential and Legislative Elections in Liberia.

The training is a key part of partners’ commitment to support credible and transparent elections in Liberia.

The UNDP Election Basket Fund supports the National Elections Commission and other agencies strengthen the electoral system in Liberia with a fund of USD16 million.
